Talkin About Voodoo Bop

Greetings friends,

Tonight, I have scene some of the most inspiring and best music of my life. I saw the Astral Project live at the Artists Quarter in downtown Saint Paul. The group consisted of Tony Dagradi on tenor sax, James Singleton on bass, Steve Masakowski on 7 string guitar, and Johnny Vidacovich on drums.

This group is inovative and had the deepest groove I have ever heard. Thank you Johnny for that. They could build it up, play uptempo jazz, but you could just feel the backside of the pocket so hard. Johnny brought the whole second line groove to the table that night and very unique ways. Talk about grooves with some grease on it. Singleton showed incredible musicality in his bass playing by using loops and even playing trumpet and looping trumpet harmony on a tune. Masakowski at times sounded like Allan Holdsworth, what a trip that was! And Dagradi played with so much soul and blues. What a night.

I also bought their cd Voodoo Bop, dig it if you haven't already.

Perhaps the coolest part of the night was hangin with all of my friends named Dave! Good thing my middle name is David! haha. Hanging with my teacher Stanoch was an education since he studied with Johnny back in the day. He pointed some cool things out to me as well. Talk about an education. He also introduced me to Johnny and hanging with that cat is a trip! What a great guy with tons of energy and stories.

Please dig this group, you will not be dissapointed! Take care until next time!
