Re-Occuring Theme?

Tonight I had the wonderful opportunity to hang with a legend, Clyde Stubblefield. For those of that don't know, he was James Brown's drummer. First of all, this was like a dream come true. I have Dave Stanoch to thank for this opportunity. He was kind of enough to invite us afterwards to hang with Clyde. Stanoch knowing Clyde well, he was able to have Clyde tell us some great stories that he thought would really benefit us. Thanks Dave!

The coolest thing was how honest Clyde is. He is a genuine person. At the same time he tells you how it is. He made a great statement, "If you aren't having fun, don't do it!" That could be music in general or just a certain gig. That really resonated with me. Life is too short my friends to not be happy. Not saying everything is going to be happy, but be careful who you work for. Remember, your dignity is worth something too!

This year, I have met some great people in the music industry like Clyde, Sheila E., Stanton Moore, Ron Sobel, John Snyder, Mike Stern, Roy Haynes, etc. Either way they all have a reoccuring theme. BE HONEST and TRUE TO YOURSELF. If Snyder wasn't honest with Simon about Stevie's vocals during the mixing/mastering of "Loves Me Like A Rock," He may not have won a grammy. A lot of times being honest is taking a risk, but don't ever risk your dignity. If you can keep that, people will respect you and the decisions you make. It has worked for everyone musician I know, and non-musicians! Don't take the easy way, don't slack, be true to yourself and give it all you got %110 of the time all the time!
