Last Thursday, Ron Sobel, the new Music Business Department Head at McNally Smith College of Music, spoke at my Creating a Life in Music class, taught by Janis Weller. Ron had many great things to say, but a couple stood out to me in particular.
First moment of bliss:
Ron made me feel even more blessed and thankful that I am attending McNally Smith. He stressed the importance of us knowing and being aware in the music business. He mentioned not many schools teach the business end, alot of it is just the actually playing part. What will a performer do if they don't know how to protect themselves?
That is easy, they get ripped off and screwed out of a LOT of money, money that pays bills for us starving musicians. I feel fortunate that McNally teaches us about business or at least makes us AWARE of the music business. I know I will not know everything about record labels, copyrights, contracts, etc. but I feel I know enough to the point I know who I could trust to help me out. Plus, with a little help from my friends and teachers, I can find plenty of materials to educate myself on the music business, to a point.
Second Moment of Bliss:
I couldn't believe how humble of a human Ron is. He was very nice to listen to and gain vast amounts of knowledge. He made a point very clear, music business people would not exist without.... you guessed it... MUSICIANS!!! We need to work together and help each other to protect us from the many crooks in the music business.
Peace.Love.Music
