Greetings Friends,
Some things have been bothering me. Why is society as a whole just cruel? Let me give you some examples of things I have recently heard/read:
- facebook status: in response to someone getting in a car accident, "...most frustrating week in a long time. People in general, they're the worst."
- in conversation with some friends about healthcare: "We should only do what is necessary in an ER situation." and "Health Care is a privilege." Or my personal favorite which is some people believe that health care should not be provided to illegal immigrants.
- direct quote from CNN.com "Republicans have mounted a fierce campaign against the bill, using procedural tricks to slow debate and casting the measure as an unnecessary government intrusion in health care that will raise costs."
Well with all that here is one quote I think is worth everyone's time to read. It gives me a little hope.
"In remarks Tuesday on the Senate floor, Reid acknowledged the toxic political environment surrounding the nearly yearlong debate.
Senators should set aside 'personal animosity,' he said. 'There's a lot of tension in the Senate, but I would hope everyone would go back to their gentlemanly ways. ... Let's just all try to get along.'"
Who are we to judge if someone deserves health care or not? Who are we to say people are the worst? Especially when you are one of those "people." What makes you better than those other "people" that are apparently worse?
I know this is a bit of a stretch, but what if we just helped people to help? No rewards for doing so. What if we all stopped worrying about what they did or did not do to deserve or not deservce health care? What if we put trust into people again and believe people are great and that we can learn and benefit from everyone? Even in the worst of situations.
Maybe if that happened, people would be more accepting of people and willing to help one another out. Perhaps when you are walking down the street everyone waves to each other and says hi. Maybe you will have a random conversation with someone on a bus, or at the lunch table at school with someone you never met before. Someone is in the ditch along the interstate and you just stop because you want to make sure they are all right. Wouldn't this be a blissful life!
Tonight I saw something amazing on the news. A church (not sure where) sold a rare and precious stain glass window for a large sum of money (sorry, I can't remember the amount) and they did it so they can give it back to the community and help out the less fortunate. Beautiful.
Why is that I can only imagine such a time and place and it is not hear on earth?
Peace and Love,
Daniel Heier
